“You are far too modest about your work.  The landscape is splendid with a marvelous mood to it and a really good sky…” letter from Jeffrey Smart, 27 February 1983

Extracts from letters from Jeffrey Smart to Jeff Ferris  1980-1986

“Dear Jeff, I am writing this on a boat on the Nile …. I thought it a good idea to write to you and answer a few of the questions you put to me on being an artist. …. The only way to be unique is by trying not to be original – embrace any influence wholeheartedly … just don’t think about it too much … you must continuously go back to nature, the visual world I mean; for new shapes, new compositions, new colours, otherwise you will become stylized, moribund. …. When I get home I should tell you I’m having a copy of this letter made in order to send to a friend (Peter Quartermaine) who is writing a book about me …” Letter from Jeffrey Smart April, 1980

“Dear Jeff, thank you for your letter.  If you like my work I hope you also like that of Piero Della Francesco at Arezzo.  I presume you will be wanting to see these frescoes .. be sure to bring some pictures of your works …. Letter from Jeffrey Smart  1980

“You are far too modest about your work.  The landscape is splendid with a marvelous mood to it and a really good sky…” letter from Jeffrey Smart, 27 February 1983

“Your slides are very impressive and I feel sure you are bound to have a market one day …. Paint lots of small studies …. letter from Jeffrey Smart 27 December 1984

“..getting light in a painting, of course your shadows have to go darker than they are in ‘real life’.  If you think of a ‘shine’ on a surface, it is actually emitting light by refraction – whitest white can never achieve this tone ….”  letter from  11 September 1985

“Jeff don’t be disturbed about what art dealers or art agents say.  Do you think a real estate agent knows about architecture, homes and land and is any judge of it?  He is in it for the money…. I have just abandoned a canvas I have been working on for over a year now.  I am starting it all over again.  We will have to have a ceremonial burning of the old painting. So don’t be discouraged if a picture does not come off…… Your painting of the two rubbish bins is super, remember, it takes a great deal of moral courage to go on being a painter.” letter from Jeffrey Smart 4 November 1986
